*Strong interpersonal skills. Occupational therapy careers requires you to interact closely with other people. That means that you need to be able to listen to others. You also need to be able to get your ideas across to them in a way that is easy for them to understand. In many cases, you will be working with children or with the disabled. Because of that, you need to be able to express complex topics in a way that is easy to understand.
* Empathy. Often, people who are undergoing occupational therapy have just been through a traumatic event or are frustrated because they can’t do all of the things that they want to. You need to be able to empathize with their situation and to treat them with kindness and compassion. By putting yourself in their shoes and trying to understand what they are going through, you can help them see things in a different light and find ways to overcome their challenges.
* Creativity. As an occupational therapist, you will regularly need to come up with creative solutions to unique problems. For instance, if someone has had a medical event that has limited their mobility, you may need to find new ways for them to do everything from getting dressed to getting in and out of their home.
